Look at what Doug Armstrong has done

Doug Armstrong has done something with this Blues team that goes overlooked.  He has managed to keep the Blues in the playoffs with strong teams for years, along with drafting great prospects.  If you look at prospects like Jordan Kyrou and Klim Kostin, they are two of our top prospects and that goes without mentioning Robert Thomas, Tage Thompson, Jake Walman, and Vince Dunn.  Dunn is up for the first time in his career and he is already making an impact.

If you look at the Blues core:

  • Vladimir Tarasenko
  • Jaden Schwartz
  • Alex Pietrangelo
  • Colton Parayko
  • Joel Edmundson
  • Robby Fabbri
  • Brayden Schenn
  • Jake Allen

and then you look at a team like Edmonton, who have had a plethora of top picks

  • Connor McDavid
  • Leon Draisaitl
  • Darnell Nurse
  • Ryan Strome
  • Ryan Nugent Hopkins
  • Adam Larsson
  • Milan Lucic
  • Oscar Klefbom
  • Patrick Maroon
  • Cam Talbot

While the McDavid and Draisaitl combo looks like it could be one of best in league.  I like the Blues core over the Oilers.  We also have up and coming guys like Jordan Kyrou, Robert Thomas, Tage Thompson, Jake Walman, and Vince Dunn, who could be bringing himself into the Blues core now.  Who do the Oilers have that could have an impact? Jesse Puljujarvi?  He could be a pretty good player but his development has started off pretty slow.

A reason for the Oilers struggle as of right now is bad trades and failed draft picks.  For example, they traded away Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson.  Hall is probably the best player on the Devils now and Larsson hasn’t really turned out all that much for the Oilers.  They also traded away Jordan Eberle for Ryan Strome this past offseason and that isn’t looking so hot for the Oilers now.  Strome has struggled early for the Oilers and Eberle has 9 points in his first 12 games with the Islanders.  Oilers have been trying to fix their defense for awhile now but now they aren’t scoring.  That’s what bad trades and failed draft picks can do to your team.

My point is that Armstrong deserves credit for what he has done here despite not bringing Lord Stanley to St. Louis… yet.  It isn’t easy to stay as on of the top teams in the league for 6+ years and still get quality draft picks and prospects.  I don’t think too many GM’s can do what Armstrong has done here and he deserves a some recognition for that.
